new york times vs. the florida alligator

Mar-18-2008

i just had a huge reality check.  i’m working on a budget for some condos up in gainesville, fl.  upon seller request, i started looking into the independent florida alligator, a weekly publication put out by the university of florida.  i called the newsroom and dialed over to the advertising department to get rates and other advertising information.  this is where my mind was blown.

::preface:: i deal with publications such as the new york times, wall street journal, los angeles times, and the chicago tribune, on a daily basis ::end scene::

ok, so back to where my mind blew up.  the advertising department line answers.  i swear, it must have been an 18 year old freshman sorority girl a very mature and helpful young woman that answered the phone.  she then informs me that she is the one that will be helping me with rates and getting my ad run.  after our conversation was over i just sat there  in my chair playing back in my mind what had happened.  it just goes to show you, just about anyone can do the job of classified advertising rep.  and then it hit me.  my mind was blown again.  if this unexperienced college student can do it, how come our big time reps screw up so often?  if you can answer this than you are wiser than i am.
