winter haven is truly a different culture than i was familiar with in lakeland. i had the experience this morning of being able to really dive into the winter haven lifestyle and eat breakfast with a friend at a dive quaint restaurant and engulf myself with locals and their ways. we both ordered the biscuits and gravy, to which a question arose. before the order was placed the waitress was asked if the sausage gravy was good. she looked at us as the gears in her head began to move. this woman seriously pondered the question, to which she confidently answered “yeah, it is good.”
a few minutes later our food was ready and we started to eat. for my preference, the gravy wasn’t white enough. definitely not your standard sausage gravy. now get this, our waitress came over and asked how it was. that is a pretty standard question in most eating facilities but she coupled it with “i’ve never tasted it.” i wondered, for several minutes, how she could earlier say that it was good and then comment that she had never tried it. its like people who say they don’t like cole slaw but have never actually eaten any.
the point during breakfast that really stuck with me in my initiation into eastern polk county was centered around the gentleman sitting at the table directly in front of my field of vision. upon finishing his meal he removed his teeth, used his lips as a cleaning device to remove stray morsels of his breakfast delicacy and then dipped them into his glass of water (i assume it was water) to rinse them squeaky clean. with a quick shake they returned inside his mouth. i kid you not.
after bearing witness to this we decided it was probably time to head to work. On our way out we were left with a simple phrase from our waitress. “come back and see us” she said as we walked through the exit. these words rang in my ears as they transformed into “y’all come back now, ya hear?” the strangest part of all is that i can’t wait to go back.
